During your trip you have probably already had the opportunity to taste the excellent Costa Rican coffee. Maybe you have even enjoyed a “café chorreado” prepared in the traditional way. In this method of preparation, the ground coffee is placed in a kind of cloth bag and infused with hot water. Tastes really good. But where does coffee come from, how is it grown and processed? If you want to get to the bottom of the secrets of coffee, one of our coffee tours in Costa Rica is the right thing to do for you.
Only the high altitudes, such as in Monteverde in the Dota region or around the Poás volcano provide ideal conditions for growing the coffee plant. Your guide will explain the entire process to you from harvesting and drying to roasting the beans. Here you will learn how to recognize the quality of the beans, what Peaberry means and how the roasting time affects the taste of the coffee. If you travel between November and February, the berries will be ripe and you may even be able to try your hand at harvesting coffee yourself.
There are different times depending on the provider. The tours normally start at 10:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm, some even at 8:00am. Sometimes there is even a coffee night tour at 5:30pm.
Depending on the provider the tours last around 2 to a maximum of 3 hours.
Anyone can participate in the coffee tour.
A tour costs about $35 per adult and about $15 for children.
