Mammals of Costa Rica

Small and cuddly? Appearances are deceptive...

There are trips for bird watchers, frog watchers and orchid lovers but no trip specifically for mammalian species watchers. Why not? Costa Rica is one of the most mammal-rich countries on earth. Mammals belong to the class of vertebrates. They are characterized by suckling their offspring with milk, and most of them have a coat.

According to recent data there are around 6,500 different species of mammals around the world, divided into three major subclasses: egg-laying proto-mammals, marsupials and higher mammals. In the very small country of Costa Rica alone 220 of these mammals can be found on land as well as 25 marine mammals. However, 107 of these species are bat species. Costa Rica travelers can see various rodents, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, agoutis, sloths and coatis. The rarest mammal in Costa Rica is the jaguar.
