The best time to travel to Costa Rica depends largely on personal preferences and planned activities. Typically, the best time to travel to Costa Rica is from December to April, as this is the dry season in large parts of the country, and there is less rainfall. However, we would like to explain below why the other months also have their charms and what regional differences there are.
The main seasons in Costa Rica are the rainy season and dry season. The rainy season runs from May to November, and the dry season from December to April. However, this applies primarily to the Pacific region and the Central Valley. The Caribbean coast has different rainy seasons, and the northern region (apart from the North Pacific) is also partially influenced by the Caribbean weather.
The Central Valley around the capital San José can be visited all year round. There are occasional rain showers all year so you should always carry a rain jacket.
The Caribbean is very easy to travel to in the low season from September to October. The area should be avoided in December and January.
As already mentioned, the classic high season from December to April boasts the most hours of sunshine in the country. The blue sky often reflects in the sea, and the water is clear and perfect for snorkeling or diving. Another advantage is that the dry weather also means fewer mosquitoes. Hiking is at its peak now, although the sun and the often hot weather (especially in April) can be a challenge. One disadvantage of the high season is that there are naturally more tourists in the country. So, you’re unlikely to have private experiences during this time. Costa Rica also hosts major holidays from December to February, which brings with it additional domestic tourism. Prices are higher during the high season, and you often have to make reservations well in advance to ensure a spot at your desired hotel.
The low season from May to November, also called the “green season,” now reveals a completely different landscape. While the vegetation, especially in the northwest of the country, was previously brown and parched, everything now shines a vibrant green with the first rains in May. The lush nature is accompanied by falling prices and fewer tourists in the country. In July, the so-called “little summer” often returns, during which it hardly rains for a few weeks in some Pacific regions. Rainfall also occurs mainly in the afternoon, leaving the mornings ideal for excursions, hikes, and other activities. The Caribbean region is a great place to visit in September and October, and the northern region around La Fortuna often has a very pleasant climate at this time, with fantastic views of the Arenal Volcano. In addition, the off-season is when most whales migrate, and many turtles come to the coast to lay their eggs. This is a great opportunity for nature lovers to experience these animals up close.
