No wonder hiking is one of the most popular activities in Costa Rica. Certainly the most considerate way to discover the jungle while unwinding and forgetting the stresses of everyday life, it’s ideal for travelers of all ages. In Costa Rica everyone gets their money’s worth, whether hiking through the national parks and reserves on their own or on guided tours with local guides. The hiking trails are very well signposted and hikes can usually be extended or shortened depending on your condition and motivation.
Take your time and consciously enjoy the smells and sounds, the colors and impressions of the Costa Rican jungle. At least at the beginning of the trip, we recommend taking part in at least one or two guided tours, because the local guides explain exciting details about the most inconspicuous plants and also find the best camouflaged animals that we, as hobby hikers, would have overlooked. All national parks can be hiked on your own, the currently only exception is the Corcovado National Park, which may only be entered with a certified guide. Hiking and trekking tours in the Corcovado National Park should therefore be booked early. Visits to the other parks are generally also possible spontaneously without prior notification.
In addition to hiking in the national parks of Costa Rica, there are a large number of hiking opportunities in various reserves or on trekking routes. If you are interested in extended, multi-day trekking tours through Costa Rica, we will be happy to advise you. Well-known are, for example, the Ruta Sukia, which starts in the Dota region, or trekking tours lasting several days in the Corcovado National Park. A special highlight for hikers in good physical condition is the ascent of ChirripĆ³, the highest mountain in Costa Rica at 3,800 meters.
When does it start? You are very flexible when hiking on your own. It is worth leaving early in the morning, as the chances of good weather are high even in the rainy season and many animals – especially birds – are particularly active in the early morning hours. Note that most national parks close their entrances at 3pm as it gets dark around 6pm year-round.

Hikes can be planned according to your mood, on average a hike in the national parks takes 3-4 hours.
Depending on the type of national park, the nature of the hiking trails and the altitude, a normal to good level of fitness is required. We would be happy to advise you on suitable hiking opportunities.
A hike is not dangerous if you follow the instructions of the parks and your guides. Never leave the marked paths, wear sturdy shoes and don’t overestimate your physical condition. Always take enough drinking water with you on your hikes, wear sunscreen and ideally light, long clothing. Do not carelessly touch trees, branches and railings, as animals such as scorpions or ants can hide there.
When it comes to hiking, age is less important than physical fitness, which is required for the respective routes.
Entrance fees may vary depending on the national park or reserve. On average, these are around US$ 15 per person.
