Tortuguero Immersion

The North Caribbean is calling you - will you answer the call? If you are already staying in San Jose, you will be picked up in the center this morning. Of course we will discuss the meeting point with you beforehand - maybe it is also possible right at your hotel. You have to be awake early, because most of the time we start before 7 am. Between the tropically overgrown steep slopes of the Braulio Carillo National Park, the ride leads through to Guapiles. Have you been to the South Caribbean or La Fortuna before? Then your module can start here.

After breakfast, the transfer bus of the lodge will take you to the pier, where you will change into several boats. Depending on the port of departure, the trip takes one to two hours. At lunchtime you will be welcomed at the lodge, receive a short introduction and feast on the buffet.

In the afternoon the first guided tour will take place. With the local guide you will walk through the botanical garden of the lodge. Afterwards you can explore the area and the beach on your own until dinner is served. How do you feel on your first evening in the natural paradise Tortuguero?

Optionally, you can also start the day before breakfast with an early morning tour. This already takes place when the national park opens at 6 am.

You can have breakfast today between 7 and 8 am at the buffet, because at 8:30 am the included boat tour through the impressive channels of Tortuguero National Park starts. Monkeys are playing and having breakfast in the trees, caimans are resting at the edge of the canals and with a lot of luck you might even catch a glimpse of a wild cat like the jaguar or an ocelot. The guide will not only show you the diverse wildlife, but will also explain the local characteristics of the climate and vegetation.

Between 12 and 2 PM you will enjoy lunch at the lodge before going on an excursion to the village. You won't find any cars here, but you might find a nice souvenir or want to visit the local museum for a small fee of about 2 US$. The way back to the lodge is often along the beach. If you like, you can also collect plastic bottles or cans washed up by the sea and make your own contribution to nature conservation. Dinner is again buffet style.

Are you by chance on site from July to September? Then you should not miss the egg-laying of the sea turtles. This takes place on an optional tour at night. Please wear dark clothing so as not to disorient the animals. Until October, with a little luck, the newly hatched turtles can still be observed on their way into the sea.

Note: The national park entrance fee for Tortuguero National Park (approx. 15 US$ + VAT) must be paid directly to the national park authority SINAC. This is now only possible online. However, the ticket can also be bought the same morning, but better the day before. On site at the lodge they will be happy to help with the purchase of the tickets should there be any questions or uncertainties.

You don't have a fixed tour program today and so you can just let nature work its magic on you. Relax in the hammock, by the pool or with a walk on the beach. Visit the frog garden or go in search of sloths and monkeys in the trees. Optionally, you can take part in various boat tours. Please note that you will have to pay the national park entrance fee again.

The last morning of your Tortuguero adventure begins. The breakfast buffet awaits you from 7am and at 9am you take the motorboat back to the harbor. In the bus of the lodge you will go back to Guapiles, where either your package ends or you take the transfer to San Jose after lunch.
