Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is located near the border with Nicaragua and is one of the most important wetlands in the country. It is characterized by its diverse wildlife, picturesque waterways and pristine environment. This unique region is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers.
We will leave La Fortuna around 7:30 am and drive for about two hours through the San Carlos Plain until we reach the town of Los Chiles. Along the way we will see many of the pineapple and sugar cane growing areas that are characteristic of the region. Our guide provides us with a lot of interesting information.
At the Rio Frio, the most important river of the region, we will board a comfortable covered motorboat, which will offer us excellent opportunities for wildlife watching and will be captained by an experienced boatman.
Together with our guide we will cruise the river for about 2 hours, looking for monkeys, herons, sloths, iguanas, caimans, turtles and other animals. Caño Negro is home to not only a diverse wildlife, but also an impressive flora. The region is covered by lush rainforests, mangrove forests and floating plants. Here you will find rare species of orchids, colorful bromeliads and majestic trees. The unique combination of flora and fauna makes Caño Negro a true natural paradise. Birdwatchers will also be in their element, as the wetland is home to over 300 different species of birds.
After the numerous sightings and photos, we will dock again and enjoy a delicious typical lunch. Then we are ready to return to La Fortuna in our comfortable mini vans.
Note: During Feb., Mar., and Apr. many species of migratory birds visit the refuge. If you are a bird-lover, you don’t want to miss this destination. Ask about our specialized birdwatching tours.
